I am going to join in a year or so, and wanted some good reading material. I figure some ASVAB prep books are always a given, but I was wondering what other people thought?

You can always read up on how to improve your ASVAB that’s one of the best things you can do.. other than that, I recommend you pick up a book called: "My War" by Spc Buzznell (think I got the name right) anyway. that’s the title and it’s basically a collection of things and REAL military day to day basis when you’re in Iraq as well as some background on how things run in a unit. It’s a good read, with a couple of laughs as well..
other than that, just watch some movies.. Full Metal Jacket and Stripes. I’d say private Benjaminas well but some of those situations are kind off unreal in today’s army.. or in any army that I know of. Do not watch Jarhead.. I have some close marine friends and that movie was just an embarrassment for the Corps! it even embarrassed me.

Read you later.

Fields of Fire by James Webb, Warfighting (Marine Corps doctrine in mass market paperback), Marine! The Life of Chesty Puller by Burke Davis, and Making the Corps by Thomas Ricks come to mind.

But I’ve got a little bit of bias.

Try some military history. If you got anything better than a D in school you’ll pass the ASVAB just fine.

The Last True Story I’ll Ever Tell by John Crawford

It’s about a Florida National Guardsman’s tour in the beginning of the war. It has a lot of what EVERYBODY in the military does – complaining! But it is a really good read about extended deployments, b-s jobs, life away from home, etc.
