The blacks took part in world war two and became soldiers, sailors, etc.. so segregation at that time was not so present. But what was the treatment of blacks AFTER the world war two? Did segregation become more present again? Were they treated the same as what they were before world war two, or did the treatment of blacks change?

Black Americans serving in WW II were usually relegated to menial support roles: cook, dishwasher, etc… It wasn’t until they were shipped off to England in the days prior to D-Day when they began to say signs of acceptance. Black Americans soldiers dating white English women. To the white Americans, this was at the very least controversial. Eisenhower was in charge and when asked to do "something about this," he refused and down played it in the media (giving it no attention). The military then, was still very segregated.

After the war, most went home and back to their former lives. America it seems had changed very little in regards to civil rights and equality under the law. President Truman attempted to get civil rights legislation passed, as did President Eisenhower. Ike managed to desegregate the military and the public schools, but in doing the latter, had to call out the National Guard to enforce his new policy. It seems Ike’s civil rights legislation met stiff resistance by the Democrats who later agreed to sign on , only after two (JFK and LBJ) reworded the bill, rendering it useless). Later when LBJ became president, the Republican lead congress again tried get it passed but the Dem.s again tried to stop it, this time by filibustering. As late as 1972, Democrat Presidential hopeful George Wallacce stood on a campaign promise of "No More Desegregation!!" In the 1980s, Republican President Ronald Regan signed into law a national month of recognition (Black History Month) as well as a federal holiday (MLK Jr.’s Birthday).

The standard of living had gone up for black Americans, but acceptance and equality still elluded them. At present, from my non-white, non-black perspective, I believe most blacks now face a situation of indifference. Tthey are no longer discriminated against (to the same extent as they once were), that most of the troubles they now face, if they face trouble, is brought upon them by their own actions or inactions. Again, most people simply don’t care.

I am going to join in a year or so, and wanted some good reading material. I figure some ASVAB prep books are always a given, but I was wondering what other people thought?

You can always read up on how to improve your ASVAB that’s one of the best things you can do.. other than that, I recommend you pick up a book called: "My War" by Spc Buzznell (think I got the name right) anyway. that’s the title and it’s basically a collection of things and REAL military day to day basis when you’re in Iraq as well as some background on how things run in a unit. It’s a good read, with a couple of laughs as well..
other than that, just watch some movies.. Full Metal Jacket and Stripes. I’d say private Benjaminas well but some of those situations are kind off unreal in today’s army.. or in any army that I know of. Do not watch Jarhead.. I have some close marine friends and that movie was just an embarrassment for the Corps! it even embarrassed me.

Read you later.

Just a book about that decade…?
About the events, people, military, wars, society?

Thanks!

My wife isn’t American but she has a green card and is thinking about joining some branch of the military. She has a highschool diploma from her home country but no GED or anything from the states. Does her diploma still count or does it have to be from the US? I have been trying to find basic military requirements of the militaries but it has been a real pain.

I am from foreign country, too, with green card and in Army National Guard. All they asked me for was green card, social security number, and high school diploma. I think foreign high school diploma should work since it’s a high school diploma.

Not only that, once she signs up, she will be also eligible for early US Citizenship. Unlike civilians waiting for 5 yrs to apply for citizenship and takes whole year to get it after applying, you could apply and get it within 6 months or so.

Yes, I think her diploma should count. Take it to a recruiter and see what he/she says.

Good Luck!

Im wondering if theres any good books based around warhammer 40k: dawn of war.
specifically one about space marines. any suggestions?

Dear god where to start? There are literally hundreds of stories in the warhammer 40k/ Black Library publications. If you want Space Marines, they take up a large chunk of the market. The Horus Heresy series are a set of novels based 10,000 years before any events in Dawn of War were even thought about, and almost completely feature the legions of Chaos before and during their fall.

There are of course, the books titled "Dawn of War:…." but that only takes up room as five books in an already massive collection. They have novels for Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Space Wolves and the Ultramarines as well.

If you are just getting into warhammer 40k books, I recommend not even starting with the Space Marines and going with the Imperial Guard novels that feature Caphias Cain, an imperial commissar. the series is hilarious and will ease you into the universe and get you use to the writing styles and references you will encounter in more Lore Heavy books like the ones that feature Space Marines.

Go onto amazon and look up "Warhammer" or "Warhammer 40k/40,000" and also check the SciFi section of your local bookstores for physical copies.
